Albert Ashcroft was the son of William and Sarah Ashcroft. He was born at Urbal, Coagh about 1891. He was one fourteen children, eleven surviving. The family lived in Coagh, but then moved to a farm in Ballygoney. Private Albert Ashcroft served with the North Irish Horse (Service No 1481) and with the Corps of Hussars (Service No 71399). It seems Private Ashcroft served overseas between 1916 and 1918. Albert’s brother, Sergeant Hugh Ashcroft, also served with the North Irish Horse during the war. He too survived.

Albert Ashcroft was the son of William and Sarah Ashcroft. William Ashcroft and Sarah Tosh / Toss / McIntosh were married on 28th May 1874 in the district of Cookstown.
Albert shcroft was born at Urbal, Coagh, County Tyrone about 1891. He was one fourteen children, eleven surviving.

The 1901 census lists Albert as age 10, living with the family at house 5 in Great Georges Street, Coagh. His father was a horse trainer. Albert was still at school.
The 1911 census lists Albert as age 20, living with the family at house 1 in Ballygoney Beg, Springhill, County Londonderry. They were a farming family and Albert is described as a farmer’s son.
Private Albert Ashcroft served with the North Irish Horse (Service No 1481) and with the Corps of Hussars (Service No 71399).
Private Albert Ashcroft was home on furlough in early 1918.
From the Mid Ulster Mail dated 9th February 1918: Coagh
Among the soldiers on leave this week are Private Matt Robinson, Corporal W McCollum and Sergeant J Mitchell, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, and S.S. Albert Ashcroft, North Irish Horse.
It seems Private Ashcroft served overseas between 1916 and 1918.
Private Albert Ashcroft would have been about 27 years old when the war finished.
Albert’s brother, Sergeant Hugh Ashcroft, also served with the North Irish Horse during the war. He too survived.
